1987: The Perl programming language (developed by a linguist) is born.
1995: Andrew Spencer’s Phonology is published by Blackwell.
1996:
The school board of Oakland, California, votes to recognize “Ebonics”
as a minority language. Thus begins a heated debate in the USA on
whether African-American Vernacular English is a language in its own
right, or simply a dialect of English.
2002: The “International Language Week” begins today. It occurs annually in the third week of December.
